Riddles for Kids and their Curious Parents No.3

Riddles for Kids and their Curious Parents No.3

One day at the supermarket we bumped into a tall man with a sweet looking mustache. The man with the mustache was handling his own business and all. But something captured our attention, it was a giant sticker on his back saying “Riddles are like Candy”.  We love candy and we love riddles, so we know exactly what the mustache man was talking about. Go get your notebooks ready and give your dog a snack, we're going straight at it. Yes, this is a riddle for kids, but we’re sure some adults find it challenging just as much.

Riddle Name: One Flashlight for All

Complexity Level: 5 of 5

Here we go. Four people need to cross a rickety bridge at night. They have only one flashlight and the bridge is too dangerous to cross without it. The bridge can only hold two people at a time.

The Challenge

The people have different walking speeds: one can cross the bridge in 1 minute, another in 2 minutes, the third in 5 minutes, and the slowest in 10 minutes. When two people cross the bridge together, they must move at the slower person's pace. What is the shortest amount of time it would take all four people to cross the bridge?
